cannot get 1024x768 resolution on KDE Xserver

hi all,
i am not able to get the 1024x768 resolution on X server,
i have an nvidia card, slackware 11, kernel 2.6.19, i have DRI enabled.

earlier i had a resolution of 1024x768 on the vesa settings of xorg.conf, but when i installed the nvidia drivers, the nvidia's auto detection detects only 800x600 resolution and leaves me with no other option.
here is my xorg.conf

Hi riodeuno

In Control Center --> Peripherals --> Display in the Screen size menu have you got
any other options or just 800x600?

riodeuno 03-11-2007 10:10 AM

hi props666999,
i am afraid i don't have anything other than 800x600.
actually that is what is troubling me, i have enabled modes for 1024x768 in my xorg.conf file above, but all in vain.

riodeuno 03-11-2007 10:13 AM

infact somewhere in the xorg.log file, i had seen nvidia driver in auto detection mode and detecting only 800x600
so probably its nvidia auto mode which is not allowing any other mode
there is configuration utility for nvidia, where you can set the screen resolution as well, but there its in auto mode and i dont know how to get out of it.

XGizzmo 03-11-2007 10:30 AM

Try lowering your DefaultDepth to 16 and see if it works. If it does work you are trying a unsupported mode or maybe the amount of video ram is not being properly detected.

riodeuno 03-11-2007 10:58 AM

hi XGizzmo,
unfortunately it did not help
things are the same
can you tell me how to somehow disable nvidia's autodetection of screen resolution

XGizzmo 03-11-2007 11:12 AM

The docs for the nvidia driver are here /usr/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0
The Option "UseEDID" "FALSE" could work, but beware bypassing checks could cause damage to your display and/or video card..

if you drop back to the vesa driver does it still work?

riodeuno 03-11-2007 11:24 AM

yes whenever i copy the contents of xorg.conf-vesa to xorg.conf
it works
but obviously with DRI disabled
and how do i put the option UseEDID?
just append it to my device section?

XGizzmo 03-11-2007 11:27 AM

Try using your current xorg.conf file but change the driver from nvidia to vesa.
Just trying to make sure we are not barking up the wrong tree.

riodeuno 03-11-2007 11:43 AM

yeah it works with vesa drivers at 1024x768,no Direct rendering though.

riodeuno 03-11-2007 11:49 AM

hey it works,
all i had to do was to run
Quote:

nvidia-xconfig --no-use-edid
and on kde restart
it gives me a screen with 1024x768 resolution and glxgears show ~1300 FPS
that is fine i suppose
thanks a lot

riodeuno 03-11-2007 12:32 PM

i am afraid this will be risky as far as my graphic card is concerned,
i mean not safety checks by edid..

evildarknight 03-11-2007 01:31 PM

i did have the same problem with the nvidia driver
you should check if the correct values for horizsync and vertrefresh are the same as those in your monitor manual as these may damage your monitor this is very important when not using edid or dpms

Identifier "My Monitor"
HorizSync 31.5 - 50.0
VertRefresh 40.0 - 90.0
EndSection
