can only log in as root after upgrade

I had Slackware 10 on my computer and was trying to upgrade to 10.1 with this tutorial: http://tinyurl.com/4fmr9 but now it doesn't allow me to log in as a user, I get the message "unknown id".

I think this has something to do with the configuration files I copied over in /etc but I'm not sure which one. Could anyone lead me in the right direction? I did back up the /etc directory before I started.

Thanks

Add the user again using adduser, it seems /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow got overwrited.
