Can i run any xwindows in slackware 10.0 with limited hardware?

Hello,
I wanna know whether i can run any kind of Xwindows in slackware 10.0 running in pentium 1 processor with 49mb ram and a dell monitor. I also have realtek ethernet card. I know this computer sux. This is my second computer. I didn't buy it though. I can't upgrade it. I want to run a webserver. May be apache with mysql database, php and may be perl. I also wanna run a mail server. I am really a newbie.

As long as your video card is supported, X will run. Especially if the card supports VESA.

Its onboard graphics card. I have tried windows 98 and it works. I tried freebsd and netbsd, but when i gave startx command, it gives me a error.Like failed to start or something like that. Please note that i have only 49MB ram. Are you sure that it will run on my system. I mean Xwindows. Thanks

It'll run, no problem. You won't be able to run KDE or Gnome at any great speeds, but IceWM should be fine, or Fluxbox/Blackbox, Windowmaker, XFCE, etc...

Your errors are probably related to not setting the refresh rate right. Slack doesn't automatically configure stuff like that for you - You'll need to edit your config files by hand. That's the beauty of slack

I used to run Linux and FreeBSD on a p200mmx with 16 megs of ram and a 2 gig HDD. I used IceWM for a while, but I primarily ran Fluxbox on it for my window manager. It'll work without too many hitches, but the biggest issue is configuration - A lot of older hardware is supported, but if it isn't you'll have a hard time finding up-to-date help getting it working.

I'll be glad to offer as much help as I can - however, your number one thing to do is follow an install guide for Slackware. First read through it, and then ask questions before you install.

If you only need it as a file/web server, why are you worrying about x. Once I set it up, my server runs with no mouse, keyboard, sound, or monitor. I just ssh in and do what I need to.

On the CD there's a file called Slackware-HOWTO. Guides you right through the installation and X-Window config.

You can check out my webite, http://shilo.is-a-geek.com/slack . It will show you how to set up a web server, a mail server, and get x working. Well, it doesn't have too much on x, but it does have some good links if there isn't enough there to get you going.

I have an old 120 Mhz P1 laptop with 48mb ram. I recently switched over to "tinyx" (do a google search for it). It is a stripped down version of the normal Xfree86 V4 that uses less memory. It strips out much of the DRI and accelerated video stuff that the lame video chip can't support anyway. The thing boots from a text prompt to fluxbox in just a few seconds (maybe 15 or so). Of course it then takes forever to bring up Mozilla Firefox, but that is another story. Dillo works for a lot of browsing and is much faster.

You might also look at OpenBSD if you are serious about all these. Not that I think it would end up working much better (it claims to be more secure, and has a good track record), but all the documentation for installing and setting all this up might be in better order.

Note that you don't need X or any GUI to do any of these things. That is the beauty of these Unix-like OSes. In fact, most of the time when I'm using this old laptop, I never go into the GUI because it just slows things down (it also only has 800x600 resolution anyway). Unless I'm web browsing, I'm almost always much more productive using a bunch of virtual terminal windows.

The good thing about Slackware is that it doesn't even attempt to use a GUI during the install and configureation procedure. Many other modern distros would really get tripped up on your ancient machine.

Also, to save more memory, I almost always compile a custom kernel for this machine. If anything, it sure boots up faster.

The tinyX server that wartstew mentioned might be worth looking into. Using that, it's possible to run X on a 486 with 4MB RAM (though it'll be pretty close to unusable, with so little RAM). A standard X installation will easily run in 16MB RAM, so if you have 49MB you should have no worries; just use lightweight programs and window manager.
