Can barley hear sound in 9.1

I've run alsamixer and alsactl store and i can just barely hear the startup sound when KDE loads. I can't even hear mp3... For some reason or another the "master" alsamixer sound volume isn't saving even though i am saving it. How can i fix this? Is there a volume control someone else that i don't know about?

ya, bring up kmix and aumix, adjust all the sliders and set new volume levels as default.
