Can access Harddrive (NTFS) but not WRITE.

I want this drive to be accessable between WinXP and Slackware. I can access the harddrive (hdi1), but I am unable to write data to it.

FILE: fstab
Code:
/dev/hdc2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hdc3 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdi1 /mnt/hdi1 ntfs ro 1 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb vfat user,noauto,umask=0 0 0
The important line is this one:
Code:
/dev/hdi1 /mnt/hdi1 ntfs ro 1 0
I do not know what the
Code:
ro 1 0
represents. Slackware configured it during the installation. I have googled this problem and have just been confused. I would appreciate any help or explanation given.

From clicking on the "SIMILAR THREADS" button I know that I should not use NTFS because Linux can write but it still experimental. XP cannot use EXT2 because the software you would use in XP is experiemental also. So, those two partition type are out of the question. (I think, not completely sure. Correct me if I am wrong). I would use NTFS if is was secure. I read somewhere (Dr. Google) that both linux and xp can read FAT partition though I am not sure which one.

Please don't hessitate to contribute. Any responses are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Stick to Fat32. This is the one which both can read and write to.

yeah, couldn't agree more - useFAT 32.

Ofcourse, you could mount NTFS as writeable, but it could create chaos and make you loose data.
It's not worth it

Thanks,

I screwed my linux partition over and that data in it. I am going to start with a fresh installation in the morning. Thanks for the confirmation on FAT32. I greatly appreciate it.

If you can stick the NTFS hard drive onto another PC, then there is a way of safely reading and writing to it... with Samba. Otherwise, stick to Fat32 if it will be in the same machine.

the "ro" says that the partition is Read-Only.
If you want to find out more about what that entire file means (fstab) read this:
http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html
At least for me, this page clarified things a lot.
