can't start synergy on slack64

I trie to install synergy on two comps. while the installation in the slack32-comp war simple and works, it is not possible to start it on the slack64-comp.

When I start the server then these messages appear

Code:
root@slacki64: /home/mro/downloads # synergys -f -d DEBUG
INFO: synergys.cpp,1042: Synergy server 1.3.1 on Linux 2.6.29.6 #2 SMP Mon Aug 17 11:58:18 CDT 2009 x86_64
DEBUG: synergys.cpp,1051: opening configuration "/root/.synergy.conf"
DEBUG: synergys.cpp,1058: cannot open configuration "/root/.synergy.conf"
DEBUG: synergys.cpp,1051: opening configuration "/etc/synergy.conf"
DEBUG: synergys.cpp,1062: configuration read successfully
DEBUG: CXWindowsScreen.cpp,840: XOpenDisplay(":0.0")
No protocol specified
WARNING: synergys.cpp,435: cannot open primary screen: unable to open screen
DEBUG: synergys.cpp,457: retry in 60 seconds
synergys: CXWindowsScreen.cpp:95: CXWindowsScreen::CXWindowsScreen(const char*, bool): Assertion `s_screen == __null' failed.
Abgebrochen
I must confess, that I took the package from slacky.eu rep. 12.2 . Maybe this was not a good decision...?

Another part is: synergy expect XTEST (huh? what's that?)

Whe I start the test of being available, then i see this:

Code:
root@slacki64: /home/mro/downloads # xdpyinfo | grep XTEST
No protocol specified
xdpyinfo: unable to open display ":0.0".
Would anyone help me please.

It looks like the problem is you logged in to your Desktop Environment as a normal user, then su'd to root to run the program. The easiest "fix" would be to log out, login as root, then run your program. It has something to do with X not allowing another user (root) to connect to the X server while you're logged in as someone else. I'm not sure how to fix it, as I've tried doing xhost + with no success. Maybe a linux guru can help you more here.

vik your answer shows me the right direction. I changed in /etc/initab the default runlevel from 4 to 3 and then it works perfect. :-)

Thanks.

You shouldn't have to change the default run level to 3 (no X)--maybe I can help you get a better fix in place.

Are you trying to autostart the program? I don't know anything about Synergy, but I've dealt with a similar problem with irexec before...

not yet. I'll like it more to start as a job rather than a daemon. I'll try it this weekend.

Can you start synergy as a regular user (while logged in to your desktop environment)?
