Can't compile Samba 3.0.x in Slackware 9.1

I am trying to compile Samba 3.0.x, 3.0.1 specifically but same error occurs in 3.0.0, on my Slack 9.1 box w/o success. I was issuing some configure parameters but tried just ./configure resulting w/ same error. What I get is the following:

### Begin make output ###
...
Using FLAGS = -O -Iinclude -I/home/RESTORE/Apps/samba3/samba-3.0.1/source/include -I/home/RESTORE/Apps/samba3/samba-3.0.1/source/ubiqx -I/home/RESTORE/Apps/samba3/samba-3.0.1/source/smbwrapper -I. -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_GNU_SOURCE -I/home/RESTORE/Apps/samba3/samba-3.0.1/source
LIBS = -lcrypt -lresolv -lnsl -ldl -liconv
LDSHFLAGS = -shared -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib
LDFLAGS = -Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib
Linking bin/smbd
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.2.3/../../../../i486-slackware-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lssl
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bin/smbd] Error 1

### End make output ###

I have openssl-solibs installed so am not sure what the issue is. I checked my ldconfig output and I see

libssl.so.0 -> libssl.so.0.9.7

listed so that makes me believe ssl is there, just that samba can't find it. Any ideas?

Thanks all.

locate libssl

Check whether the path to it is listed
in
/etc/ld.so.conf

yep, that's all there as shown below.

bash-2.05b# locate libssl
/usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7
/usr/lib/libssl.so.0

bash-2.05b# cat /etc/ld.so.conf
/usr/local/lib
/usr/X11R6/lib
/usr/i486-slackware-linux/lib
/opt/kde/lib
/usr/lib/qt/lib
/usr/lib/qt-3.2.1/lib
/usr/lib

That's why I'm thrown off w/ this.
