I got the same error after running xorgsetup and X -configure. I copied my old xorg.conf over from my 9.1 and it worked fine. Apparently some of the setup tools are broken in xorg.

problem with startx

Hi,

I just recently installed Debian bf2.4 on my machine. I got the base system and gdm working. However whenever I type startx, I run into an error. This is the problem in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
ATI: Candidate "Device" Section "ATI Radeon 9600Pro"
ATI: PCI/AGP Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected.
ATI: PCI/AGP Mach64 in slot 1:0:1 could not be detected.

No Devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

I am using ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card. I am running on XFree 4.1

Anyone knows how to fix it???
