Recently I started using kdm for a graphical login instead of my usual init=3 setup.

Now I receive this error message when trying to run any GUI from the konsole in KDE as root (eg cxsetup as root):

I have run anagramarama but it opens in a blank screen, with no windows and on tty2.

Abandonning my graphical login is not an option.

This behavior is "normal" The current screen is "locked" for the current user - not root.

Try "Fast user Switch" thread for one of ways to have a screen for root alongside normal user.

Well I certainly feel stupid!
It's just that I ran these binaries from inside my DE when I used a console login and startx'd my way into KDE.
