can't run any X programs

I just did a fresh install of slack 10.2 on another machine, I type "startx" and my monitor goes black, and the power light blinks. I restarted, ran xorgcfg, everything looked good.

I am not sure what to do.

please help?

Thanks, Paul

It sounds like your config file has settings that your hardware doesn't like. Can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the brand/model of your monitor, video card, mouse and keyboard?

I can't really post it as its installed ona hard drive that I swap into this machine. I did 'pico xorg.config' and checked everything, monitor was right on, I set the resolution to a known good resolution. It was using driver nv for a geforce fx 5200, I switched to vesa, tried again, still no go. switched it back to nv and thats what its at right now. I am confused.

Nothing fresh but make sure that the HorizSync & VertRefresh values for your Monitor section are conservative (ie don't allow a setting that the hardware can't take) and that the Driver in the Device section for your video card is correct. If that's the case, try setting a low resolution in Screen section and start from there.

One other question: What happens when you press ctrl alt bksp from the blank screen? Does it return you to your terminal? Also, you might try installing the driver from nvidia. If I remember correctly, it doesn't use nv, but something else. That's not to say that nv is not correct for your installation. Good luck.
