Hello I have a problem reading a multisession DVD+R which I just burnt.
I can see the first session but not the second.
I used growisofs (with the +M option) to burn the second session.
The second session is visible using the CDRoller utility on Windows.
Does anyone know how I might get to the data under Linux?
I might be wrong on this, but i'm pretty sure muliti session dvd burning does not work in windows or linux. you will only be able to see the first session. perhapes making a copy of the dvd would work though

Well, yes, it does, in fact the DVD burning utility <growisofs> is specifically designed to operate in multisession.
And as I mentioned I can see both sessions with CDRoller under Windows, but not under Linux:

I know the program will burn it but I do not think the os will recognize anything but the first sesion. ive made multi session dvd's before under windows and linux and the OS will only see the first session
Yes, that's true, even multiple-session CD's are sometimes difficult to read with the native OS tools.
But there are utilities which do it, at least under Windows (CDRoller). The web page for dvd+rw-tools
suggests that it is certainly possible to read multi-session DVD's, but there are lots of ifs and buts.
"readcd" should do the work.
try readcd /dev/srx -fulltoc
shows you infos about
unfortunately it seems working with scsi emulation enabled only
If you need to mount a specific session
mount -t iso9660 /dev/srx /mnt/whatever -o session=x (may be 1,2....etc)
Hope this helps
Ciao
Thanks to all who answered. I find that I am now able to read
my multi-session DVD's. I find the most useful commands are
the dvd+rw set, in particular
dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/srx
This shows the track information for each session and in my
case a "fabricated toc", so presumably the usual toc is missing
and that is why it fails to show up with <readcd>. dvd+rw also
gives the disk status as "appendable" and I can add more tracks
at will.
To see the DVD contents I follow urka58 and mount with the
session specified. The sessions are then seen (using "ls")
as concatenated ie
session 1
sessions 1+2
sessions 1+2+3
etc. I have to admit I don't really know what I'm doing, but the
above procedure works for the multi-session DVD's I have
burnt so far. Another suggestion is to always burn with
the following mkisofs flags
growisofs -Z /dev/srx -J -r dirtree
These are the Joliet and Rock Ridge flags. Without them filenames
will be written in 8.3 format and only 6 directory levels are permitted.
