Can't install Slackware on Atom N450 netbook

Hi everybody!

I've got a netbook

Intel “Pinetrail” ATOM, 1.66GHz 667MHz FSB
NM 10 Express
Intel GMA3150 до 256 Мб
DDR2 667/800 2 ГБ
SATA 320 gb

and I'm trying to install Slackware 13.37 on it. I can boot from USB cdrom and start installation. On the first step I'm able to choose the kernel (hugesmp.s or huge.s) and no matter what I choose installation freezes and all I see is black screen.

The same story with Slackware 13.1, 13.0, Debian 6

Please help me with this device.

Thank you in advance,
Alex

Hi, Alex.

You didn't mention your laptop's brand so I wonder is that some custom build laptop?

Anyway, check out this link http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/

Are you sure the install freezes, or does the screen just turn black ? Is the HDD light blinking ?

Is this netbook brand new ? Did it work before with Window$ ?

Thanks for reply. This is a brand new laptop of russian company 3Q. It did not work with windows but I am able to install fedora 14 on it from liveCD.

I'm sure the installation freezes, CDROM stops, HDD lights do not blink

Try booting with 'pci=nomsi', so 'huge.s pci=nomsi'.

Unfortunately the same situation here. The installation freezes with black screen after loading initrd.img

maybe you can try using an actual usb to install slackware instead of a usb cdrom?

On the other hand, as long as you have another filesystem on your machine:

you would be able to install Slackware from ISO image:

The problem is still exists. The same situation if I install slackware from usb-flash drive or from ISO image. It seems like some of hardware isn't supported. It would be great If I could understand what hardware causes a problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Try: 'vga=normal fb=false'

still doesn't work

Hi guys!

After a unsuccessful installation of Slackware my netbook lived with Ubuntu for a year. But yesterday I decided to try Slackware on it once again.

The result surprised me a bit.

Installation of Slackware 13.37, 13.1, 13.0 still freezes (as it was before)

But installation of Slackware 12.2 was successful. So the question is - what a change was in 13.0 (present in 13.1 and 13.37) that could freeze the installation?

I'll appreciate any suggestion.

Thanks in advance

If I recall correctly, 13.0 is when support for x86_64 started. As far as I know, the Intel Atom is an x86_64 CPU, but maybe you could try the 13.37 32-bit and see if it works?

Thanks for the notice. To be honest I didn't try to install 64-bit version. All versions mentioned above are 32-bit and they do not work.

Btw, Slackware 12.2, Ubuntu and Fedora which worked fine with this hardware were 32 bit.

Hmmm...try upgrading from 12.2 to 13.37 upgrading from one version to the next instead of trying to make one huge jump. Might work then (or if not, it'll help identify the problem).

Solved

the problem is finally solved

the required flags were:

nomodeset pci=nomsi acpi=off noapic nolapic

thanks everyone for help!
