can't find java or javac with which command in slack 10.1 but j2re is installed

Is there something simple that I am missing here? I am trying to install Limewire and need to use "java -jar LimeWire.jar" because of their sloppy ways with the new version. Using sh also reports that it cannot find "java". I can't download j2re from sun's website because it redirects me because it shows that i have java installed. Any help would be appreciated.

Your problem can be caused by a number of things, and there's also more than one way to solve it, I guess.

(1) Try setting environment variable:

export JAVA_HOME <install dir of JRE>
export PATH $JAVA_HOME:$PATH

OR

(2) Create a softlink in a place included in your path.

Important: Run your command as user, not root. Root has a much shorter PATH, usually, than any other user, and can not normally do much with Java.
