There are options for eject command (man eject) :

eject -v : add comment while trying to eject cd
eject -t : close the opened tray (if drive support it but generally yes)

Hihihihi, I LOVE linux!!!

I just perfected my CD cataloging script and was thinking hard how to eject the cd-rom in the end.
I thought that it had to do with some command sending it to the device, but THAT EASY, wow!!
Yes, there is a command for everything in linux, I am always amazed when I find another one that I did not know it existed.

There must even be one called "crash" or "panic"

Does anybody know where to point me for installing a button on my machine that on pushing executes my script, so I won't have to log in into a shell? How could I get the push event from the button into the system?
Well, lazyness is the mother of all inventions.

That is in Windows, it is in the lower left of the screen and helpfully labeled "Start"

don't forget, you are also not able to open CD, when your CD is mounted. you have to umount it first before ejecting.

Well of course, that is the beauty of the mount system.

Why don't you set a hotkey for your script ?

Look at that, I did not think about that. Of course. I will try that.
Would be sweet to have a button on the machine somewhere, since I use it as a server and usually have no keyboard attached, but I guess a hotkey will do too.

Thanks

Eject doesn't work on my system, it says that hdc isn't a valid mount point or something. I know it is because I mount cds using that mount device.

Look at your fstab and try
eject /dev/hdc

But it would be more easy to do :
ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom

So you will be able to do eject just by :
eject
or at least :
eject cdrom
