Can't configure AwesomeWM

Hello, I've recently installed awesome window manager on my new Slackware distro. I've been really enjoying the controls but I've had no luck thus far customizing it. I've read the awesome wiki, but I can't seem to get anything to work. For example, when I set my theme:

Code:

beautiful.init("~/.config/awesome/themes/default/theme.lua")
instead of /usr/share/themes/...

When I restart, it gives me an all grey interface with no awesome menu button, and I get all sorts of red error messages on the side of the screen saying things about nil values. Not really sure what to do from here.

Drakeo 11-12-2013 04:52 AM

seems you may need a java run time environment read this. arch wiki on awesome grey.

jon lee 11-12-2013 06:27 AM

I compiled and installed gala WM. It, too, had a javascript/json library dependency.
Works well, but it also has very little in the way of configuration.

awesome doesn't expand ~ itself, use the following construct instead:
Code:

beautiful.init( awful.util.getdir("config") .. "/themes/default/theme.lua" )
or
Code:

beautiful.init( os.getenv("HOME") .. "/.config/awesome/themes/default/theme.lua" )
Drakeo talks about a completly different issue while jon lee talks about a different WM...

I just tried both of the above solutions cycojesus mentioned, but neither of them worked. I also saw those recommendations in the awesome wiki. No matter what I do it seems that if I edit .config/awesome/rc.lua in any way at all it breaks.

EDIT: I also noticed, that in the Awesome wiki it says to add this line to rc.lua:

Code:

beautiful = require('beautiful')
However, in my actual rc.lua, this is what's there:

Code:

local beautiful = require("beautiful")
And if I change that to just what the wiki recommends, it breaks in the same way.

cycojesus 11-13-2013 12:05 AM

Can you paste here you full rc.lua?

Hi,

it may also be helpful if you post the errors reported by awesome. Eg from your ~/.xsession-errors

Here it is. I'll post the errors, but it's difficult because I can't copy/paste them, and since most errors are on the side of the screen, I can only read parts of the errors. Awesome has a weird way of letting you know something is wrong.

EDIT: Will post errors soon.

slack_ 11-13-2013 11:26 PM

I don't seem to have an ~/.xsession-errors..

evo2 11-13-2013 11:47 PM

Hi,

the errors should be logged somewhere. It's likely system/distro specific and not a slackware user and don't know how you are starting X so I can't suggest where to look.

Another possibility is that it really isn't reporting any errors so .xsession-errors is never created. You could put an explicit write near the top of your rc.lua to make sure it really does output something. Eg
Code:

io.stderr:write("=== Starting Awesome " .. awesome.version .. " (" .. awesome.release ..") ===\r\n" )
Evo2.

Your config is the standard one.

Sorry to ask but does ~/.config/awesome/themes/default/theme.lua exists?
Are the rights on ~/.config/awesome/themes/default/theme.lua correct? $(chmod 0644 ~/.config/awesome/themes/default/theme.lua)
what is the output of
Code:

awesome -k
?

Can you post ~/.config/awesome/themes/default/theme.lua too as the error seem to be in that file.

Wow, this is actually really embarrassing, but I had forgotten that as soon as I installed awesomewm awhile ago, I incorrectly edited the actual theme.lua, then moved it to /etc/xdg/awesome and forgot that wasn't where the file originated from ::facepalm:: and after messing with rc.lua and then trying to set beautiful.init() back to to the 'default' path, I set it to /etc/xdg/awesome/...

So, I've fixed the problem, and beautiful.init is pointing to my home config file. Thanks for the help everyone.
