cable internet + pptp under slack

Hi

I have a problem with my internet connection. I use Slackware 10 and kernel 2.4.26 . (and win2k for emergencies). I have a cable modem connection which wouldn't give me problems if wasn't for the sh**ty PPTP dialer. I can connect whitout problems under wndz using the dialer. So far, i managed to "connect" under slack (i can ping my isp's server and there is name resolution (for my server and any other machine; this is, it converts cablepns.aaa.net.zzz into 212.117.xxx.xxx) but i can't ping any other machine other than my isp and my dns servers) and ifconfig shows me that eth0, lo and ppp0 are up; but route shows me my default gateway is still in eth0 and i don't manage to put it in ppp0. Every time i try to reroute the default gw to ppp0 the net goes down. Any ideas?

The simplest way to fix this is to spend like $40 to get a router (linksys, dlink, netgear) as they will handle the PPTP and will allow you to use eth0.

thanx. but i still would like to...

Thanx for the info, Joey Dale

I would like to connect anyway right from the box. (anyway, it would be easier with a d-link but, anyway). I remember having done it before (but i didn't take care of writing down what i had done) (what a ****** piece of s**t i was!) (anyway). So far, i tried:

1.- To connect using a pon script; getting the options from a provider specified in /etc/ppp/peers/provider and executing an ip-up.local after-connection script. It connects perfectly but that ****** default gw remains in eth0.

2.- To make a single script do all the work (but that sometimes took me to hang up the net). This is my ISP's recommended mechanism; although the package my ISP provides is debian-based and does not work at all under slackware so i made a similar one based on slack that doesn't manage to reroute either.

3.- To use pon with a ppp_on_boot script that does all the work; this connected me twice but messed the routing table and ever since hangs the modem every time i try to establish a connection.

I might have tried some other coctels that i don't remember.

Any ideas? Thanx in advance.

hey people out there i solved the problem. thanx

Hi

I finally solved the problem (i drank some beer and remembered that the firewall settings needed some modifications to let pptp work). Thanx a lot anyway!
