ok you can
A) add plop bootmanager's executable plpbt to your installed systems boot folder
and use it to boot usb's,etc
this is what I do as one of my pc's doesnt boot from usb.
B) use Plop already on a livecd; I include it in most of mine

you didnt say whether you had a preexisting linux distro on hdd?
you can also use plop thru windows menu too
The plop I include in my cd's doesnt install anything to mbr,etc
it just boots into a menu screen and you can choose to boot hdd, cd, and usb's
