building flash driven web sites
 

I'm running 12.2 kde on an old 486 with 2 gigs of ram.
I build html sites by hand with kwrite.
Occasionally I need to use a windows app that won't run in wine so I put an old copy of xp in V-box.
I maxed everything I could in V-box to get some speed out of it but it is still dog slow.
I've had 286's that were faster.
My dilemma is I'm wanting to branch out into flash driven sites.
They're unique and look nice.
Supposedly I need Dream Weaver, which does run in wine, yet the flash player does not.
V-box and xp is not the answer for me and I only use it when I have no other choice.
Are there any flash experienced folks here who can enlighten me as to how the Linux world overcomes building flash sites with Linux, specifically, those of us who prefer Slack?
If there are flash players that run in Linux, there is sure as heck a way to build flash sites in Linux without futching with Windows software.

Well to build flash sites you need Macromedia Flash, not Dreamweaver. I haven't tried it in wine though since I absolutely hate flash sites. You should be able to use php and javascript instead. But this is just my opinion and everyone differs.

Javascript does do most of what I'm wanting anyway and a heckuva lot easier to google than flash is when I run across a question I dunno the answer to.

Btw, the last time I tried, MF wouldn't run in wine.

I've often wondered the same about using macromedia flash in linux -- is there no open source equivalent? Would be a great project for someone to start.

I don't know of a GUI solution to this but there is the Flex SDK from Adobe.
I have used it for a couple of web apps in the past.

You found a motherboard that takes a 486 and 2GB RAM? And you're using a 486 chip? WOW.

The current open source "equivalent" to Flash is just HTML and Javascript. The current specification, which every browser other than IE already supports, has CANVAS and AUDIO elements to do Flash animations via Javascript. Combine it with AJAX (calls from Javascript to PHP, with instant responses) and you've got all you need.

Dude, you're not just running Slackware, you're running Slackware on a 486! I think you're cool enough for this.

I read somewhere about the issues on flash on different platforms. Running flash on Windows is like 1st class citizen, mac ocs is like 2nd class citizen and linux is like 3rd class citizen. It's not actually linux fault. It's adobe.

I have two boxes set up that way.
They used to be old Dell Dimensions until I did Ebay upgrades on them.
Been running Slack on this box awhile now and started with Slack 12.
It boots and runs faster than my girlfriends box which has XP pro, 4 gigs of ram and dual core processor.
I put win 7 on the other box just to be able to run Camtasia to make flash vids for web sites.
Another area I hope some coder takes an interest in sometime or other.
Yeah, I agree,, Linux users are treated like scum of the earth.

If your not to adverse to paying for software, I would recommend Anfx from Stepahead software. Does animation for both Java and flash based sites and not too expensive. It is though Window$ software, but it does run well under wine.
