Broadband Internet Help!

Hi guys,

i am trying to set up my broadband internet connection, but no luck. all i know is that i don't need username & password. i want to connect through my Belkin ethernet card on my laptop. when i start the computer, it detects the card , but i see a message, network unreachable.
then under root i run netconfig & i choose the static IP adress setup.
i think my Gateway is 192.168.2.0 & my IP is 192.168.2.1 so after i run the setup i restart & i still get the same message, network unreachable.

i would appreaciate it a lot, if you can help me with some tips.

Thanks a lot, Shemeta

as root, try:

ifconfig eth0 up

then start dhcpcd:

dhcpcd eth0

if you have a connection, you should be able to ping, so try ping yahoo.com or somewhere. if you cant't ping, your nic drivers might not be loaded. do lsmod and post back what you get, along with the model# of your ethernet card.

are you using a router? If no router you should use dhcp to get an IP automatically from your cable company. Please provide more info.

yeah, what is the deal with what you are calling the "gateway" -- what is that? and where is that IP coming from?

Sounds like he has a Broadband router. They take on the IP from the Cable Company and assign local IP's to the computers that are connected. The router acts as a gateway, but you can usually just use DHCP on your NIC cards as long as the Broadband Router is configured correctly.

Are you sure about the gateway IP? I doubt that it should end with a .0 - it would more likely be the gateway (the IP of the router) that should be 192.168.2.1, and you own IP somewhat above that.

You should try running netconfig again, choosing to use DHCP this time! This will work with most routers today.

i thought router gateways were usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (mine for ex. is 0.1), or i guess the operative idea is that the gateway ends in 1, as cphwizard said. but it sounds like something is misconfigured on the windows side or in the router software and is screwing you up. you could try netconfig again, or try to bring up the ethernet interface with the ifconfig ethx up command (dhcpcd will fail until the interface is up).

I would agree with cphwizard. The gateway is most likely 192.168.2.1 (the default on most routers) and your I.P. most likely 192.168.xx.xx (and if not, set it up yourself as something within that range)

Is your Belkin card a wireless card, or regular PCMCIA (wired)?

Thanks for all your help guys & especially Synaptical. i found out that i didn't have installed the dhcpcd daemon, so i got it from freshmeat & followed the instructions of Synaptical & my Internet just rocks right now. it's soooo fast!
thank you again for the help.

@ Sailing Gypsy

my Belkin card is regular PCMCIA.

Cheers, Shemeta
