Well I took the plunge,

Never used Linux before and decided to install Slackware so I could learn the way's of l33tness. Anyways, I got the system up and running. I'm not using Xwin or KDE or Gnome...just going to concentrate on learning straight command line for now.

My question revolves around this. In the command line, the viewable area is positioned way off the left side of the screen (horizontal adjust). I contacted the manufacturer to see if there was any hardware option to adjust the horizontal area, but was told that it can only be done with software. Is there anything that comes with the Slackware 9.0 or general linux distro that would allow me to do sofware adjustment of my screen (in commandline, not under xWin, KDE, or Gnome)?

That sounds like an adjustment you need to make with your monitor controls.

Does your monitor not have adjustments for screen position, pincushion, trapezoid, etc?

What's that "l33tness" ? Is that some script kiddie speak?

Yeah, thats the ODD thing about my comp. It doesn't have any adjustment controls at all. Its all done software side. The comp is an emachines eOne, so the all in one thing coming to bite me in the ass huh?

Any help on adjustment using the command line in linux would be really really helpfull.

Linux is, surprisingly enough, one of the main reasons why many people buy the eOne, after the cool design and compact layout. Combined in one package, the machine has the basis for a very attractive, portable and reasonably powerful Linux workstation.

This would be great, if it weren't for issues that are currently being resolved with Linux and the eOne's video system. In a nutshell, when you go to install Linux (of various flavors), the installation program seems to run fine from a video perspective, and most core pieces of the OS install without a relative hitch. In fact, everything but one piece goes well.

However, once the X-Window configuration begins to take place, either the automated probe can't determine which video card settings to use, or it comes up with incorrect settings that cause the video card to either display nothing but scrolling, colored gibberish, black screens which cause the eOne's power button to blink (indicating loss of monitor sync), or nothing at all.

Thank you for all the generous help and replies...I really appreciate it. I think I might not have aptly explianed my question. Maybe it's not exclusive to Slackware, but can be applied to the greater extent of Linux in general. I don't have any windowing system on my linux box. I'm just using the command line and the command line only. I know how to get the monitor to work with a windowing system. My problem lies within the command line interface. I'm looking for a file to edit/ utility app / anything that would allow me to adjust the horizontal position of my eOne's monitor using software, since there is no hardware solution on the monitor.

I was thinking you still might find, following one of the links above, an answer to the question about monitor adjustment through a command line command.

There isn't any that I know of. But, I could be wrong.



( And, I don't think there's anything out there. So I don't run that seti thing. ;) )
