Bootup messages not in dmesg?

I noticed when I booted up that there were a few lines saying there was a problem, and that I should look somewhere for more information.

Sadly, I didn't manage to read exactly what it said before it had scrolled off the screen. No problem, I thought, I'll just check in dmesg.

But the messages weren't IN dmesg. Nor the syslog. So I have no idea what the problem is, nor any way to find out short of rebooting a few times and hoping I manage to read the messages in time.

Any suggestions?

You can also scroll up during bootup by pressing SHIFT+PGUP
