bootsplash problem

I tried to make a bootsplash to work on Slackware 9.1.
I got all info and software I needed from bootsplash.org.
I don't know what I did wrong but doesn't work. I have a 2.6.5 kernel compiled and the latest patch I found is for 2.6.3 so I used this. After I patched like this:
#cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.5
#patch -p1 < /home/user/bootsplash-3.1.4-2.6.3.diff
then "make menuconfig" and I selected in the kernel configuration RAM disk support and initial RAM disk support, vesa vga and FrameBuffer support. On bootsplash.org I found that I have to turn on "Use splash screen instead of boot logo" but I didn't find this option so I just removed logo and enabled Device Drivers->Graphics Support->Bootsplash configuration->Bootup splash screen.
After that:
#make bzImage
#cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImageWithBootsplash
That was the kernel.
Further I downloaded splashutilities and Linux theme from bootsplash.org.
#tar -xjf bootsplash-3.0.7.tar.bz2
#cd bootsplash-3.0.7/Utilities
#make
#cp splash /sbin/
#tar -xjf Theme-Linux.tar.bz2
#mkdir -p /etc/bootsplash/themes/
#cp -R Linux /etc/bootsplash/themes
#/sbin/splash -s -f /etc/bootsplash/themes/Linux/config/bootsplash-1024x768.cfg >> /boot/initrd.splash
After that I configured lilo by changing vga to 791 and adding a new entry:
image = /boot/bzImageWithBootsplash
root = /dev/hda1
label = SlackwareWithBootsplash
initrd = /boot/initrd.splash
read-only

But the initrd.splash is not a gzip compressed data file(it is a data file) and I not think the line "initrd = /boot/initrd.splash" is correct.
When I boot again Slackware starts in 1024x768 but text, without bootsplash.
Could you help me fix this out!

Thanks!

Did you get any failures when patching? Try downloading a patch from:
http://bootsplash.de/

Then reapply it to the clean code.
