booting w/lilo, 2.4 or 2.6 option

I have Slackware 11.0 which comes with two kernels ready to go, as far as I can see. There is 2.4.33 and 2.6.21 all primed and ready in /boot and modules are enabled in /etc/rc.d under the respective kernel number. My question is this: is there any reason why I can't set both up in lilo and select which I want to run at boot time? I have little experience with lilo and I usually just run the kernel that comes with bare.i since I am running just IDEs and ext2. But I'm reluctant to crater my system by trying something unnecessary. Advice?

It's real easy to set up. Just install the packages you need. The kernels, and the modules. To save any confusion later, you could delete /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, because it's only referenced if there isn't an /etc/rc.d/rc.modules-x.x.x that matches the kernel you boot.

For the 2.6 kernel, you may have to build an initrd. Follow the instructions in /boot/README.initrd, which BTW, also has instructions on how to update your /etc/lilo.conf.

Then update /etc/lilo.conf, adding a new section for the 2.6 kernel, based on the existing 2.4 entry, but with the initrd, if needed. (I'm assuming you're running the 2.4). Don't touch the existing entry, as you'll need that as a fallback, if there's anything wrong with the new entry.

Run "lilo" as root, and re-boot. Choose the kernel you want booted.

Cheers.

If you have the kernel in the /boot directory, you should be able to edit /etc/lilo.conf to look something like (I think) (your entries may vary)

image=/boot/vmlinuz-yourkernel
label=linux
root=/dev/hda8
append="hdc=ide-scsi"

other=/dev/hda1
label=xp

Then save the file, run lilo again for it to take effect
