Alright, the kernel that you install initally I *believe* is going to be the same configuration that is default the first time you go to recompile the kernel. I can't say for certain, but regardless if it's not, it shouldn't be too hard to trim down your kernel to an acceptable floppy size. Here's some tips to take in consideration when recompiling the kernel to maximize space:
- Make as many things modules as possible!
- Only include things in the kernel that are absolute musts, such as: your filesystem support (ext2, ext3, jfs, etc), support for your harddrives (scsi, sata, ide), partition tables (if necessary, such as dual boot), NIC (if absolutely necessary)
- Determine exactly what you need to have in order to get your system up and running and disable everything else.
- Test, Test and Test again.
If you build things like video card support, NIC support, USB, etc as modules then don't forget to make sure they are loaded during the startup process. Nothing sucks like discovering that *YOU* forgot something.
