blinking cursor on upper left corner

I just finished a fresh installation of Slack 12, installed the latest ATI drivers for my card and when I start X I get a blinking cursor on the upper left corner of the screen. I've tried reconfiguring the driver, re-installing it, removing it and using the drivers shipped with the distro and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
