this one is driving me insane! Yesterday is started to install the ATI drivers (again) on my 2.6.19 slackware 11 box. After a reboot (kernel compile) i tried to start X (/etc/rc.d/rc.4) and it looked like is was doing nothing. The screen stayed black.
I looked at the Xorg.0.log... everything seems very good.. no (EE) errors / (WW) warnings or whatsoever... the fglrx module is loaded (which was not before, checked with lsmod, which says agpgart, fglrx, etc) and it looks up and running... but no screen..
anyone a clue? I can give a lot of info... but on request might be easier, since i can't find any error...
Read the first post, it has been updated to cover this.
Basically the problem is that aticonfig does not set the HorizSync and VertRefresh properly in xorg.conf, so you have to copy the values out of your old, back-up one into the new one.
The first things i do before posting a message is to use the search function, so yes, i've read the cwwilson721's guide. Yes the card is also supported by fglrx (radeon 9550)
The strange thing about this one : i'm using a system with 2 vga cards (one old trident pci card), and even with the xorg.conf pointing to only that card still nothing....
One of the last things i did was installing lg3d (sun's new 3d desktop...).. so i'm starting to think that this one has brought me into trouble..
since i could not get this thing to work (and i bit in it like a pitbull....) i reinstalled slack again.. so.. in this one: case closed with no solution..
I know this may be a little late, but this could be used for future references. The same thing happened to me when I compiled my kernel and I found out that I forgot to include Frame Buffer Support.
