fluxbox is based on blackbox. added features.
i have an item on my blackbox menu that starts up
the old kfm from kde. i only start it up when i need it.
anyway, i can click the kfm entry, and instant icons
appear. i have another entry for kpanel. I don't think you
can do this stuff with the newest kde. i have the same
sort of entries for gnome file manager and panel.
just so i don't have to start up stuff i'm not going to use,
but i have it for when i need it.

If you look at the fluxbox homepage, they explain all the differences there. As for which one is better, that is up to you. Try them both and see which one you like!

and openbox, and waimea and golem.. all based on blackbox code, and some others too i can't remember.
One of the most noticable added features in fluxbox is tabbed windows so you can have several instances of a program (or different programs if they can operate in windows of the same size) open in the same window and tab between them. It's along the lines of a tabbed browser like Opera or Mozilla.
You can have icons on your desktop only through another program running over blackbox as was mentioned before. There are also programs that allow you to have icons in a panel on your desktop and programs that you can use to put icons in your slit (I like wmdrawer for this purpose). You can use some of these programs without adding the extent of bloat that KDE or GNOME would as long as you don't use the file managers from these programs (Konqueror and Nautilus).
