I did not install pulse, but removed KDE because of the requirement.

So far so good here. But had to take a close look to a few config files and reverted multilib to be sure nothing would interfer...

I also noticed some delays when for example right-clicking with mouse on links in Firefox. Overall, browsing Firefox seemed sluggish. I have seen that other users have had the same problem.

So I basically disabled pulseaudio permanently I believe by changing /etc/client.conf as proposed here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...io-4175563797/.

Now everything is back to normal. It is really amazing that Pulseaudio itself contributed to this kind of weird hangups.

EDIT: Same problem mentioned here: http://blfs-support.linuxfromscratch...click-response.

Have you checked this troubleshooting for Pulseaudio over at Arch?

Sluggishness right now on Firefox in -current is most likely due to having to wind back optimization to -Os (or else Firefox will crash). The next Firefox major release will fix this, and then things will improve.

I doubt PulseAudio has anything to do with it, and the referenced link has nothing to do with PulseAudio either.

This update went uneventful for me. Even Pulseaudio. There's something odd, however, that could barely be regarded as an exception: Slack used to boot in 12~14 secs, and now it takes ~90 secs. The culprit seems to me to be USB detection. Otherwise, it works without any other new problems.

I report the same as poster above; I have regarded the addition of PulseAudio as largely a non-event, even given its originator's reputation. The problem I mentioned was not due to its addition, but has been a problem that plagued me in the past, even with ALSA. I anticipate that once the brouhaha dies down, everyone will regard this as something that was necessary to remain "relevant and modern", as Pat V. would put it.

Happy Slacking!

Regards,

Matt

I noticed that Seamonkey has crashed a few times when I tried to fill a form in Facebook, and one time when I made an entry in the address bar. I don't have that problem with the same version of SeaMonkey in 14.1.

Also, a white bar sometimes shows up on the left side of the top panel on Xfce 4.12. It blocks access to the menu from the top panel, but I can still access the menu with a right click on the desktop.

I am the second one with same issues as Bindestreck. I noticed delays when browsing (Firefox, Seamonkey e.t.c.) and I got my first computer crash resulting in a cold reboot.

It seems that setting "autospawn" to "no" removed all those issues and it looks like Pulseaudio is the culprit.

Out of curiosity, what DE/window manager are you using?

Edit: Checking this might also be good: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29650

Maybe you should run memcheck.

I upgraded my crappy HP-635 notebook to -current and it's quite happy with pulseaudio. In fact, using pulseaudio was the easiest that way I've gotten my freaking speakers to work on that thing. I've had no issues with Firefox or Seamonkey while using it. Then again, I've also got the flashplayer plugin from slackbuilds 14.1 installed.

From the link, I can see why some people think Mr. Poettering is a, well, what my handle here means.

Yeah, blame the distribution, not the software for being crap. Classic megalomaniac developer syndrome.

Anywhos, I'd like to know how one can run pulse only from X11/DE startup rather than boot-time as a secondary sound server to ALSA, with dmix as the primary so I can control my resources better and still have pulse able to be used as needed by the DE only.

Please, stop spreading FUD, go back to bed and let the grown-ups handle actual problems. Thank you!
