big kernel issue

Hi guys, i'm hoping you could help me with this one.

Yesterday i got the DRI working for my ati graphics card, but late in the evening my harddrive collapsed and started to give me errors about corrupted data.

Now to the problem, i formated my linux partition and reinstalled slackware and tried to get DRI running again, and it didn't work at all so i tried today with compiling a new kernel (2.6.17.7) and it works just fine until i am about to reboot, nothing happens. Just a black screen, i have tried to recompile the kernel about 5 times without sucess, is there anyone who has a suggestion?

i'm running the following:
intel pentium 4 HT 3,8 ghz
ddr2 2048 mb ram
intel motherboard i think
ati radeon x850xt PE
sata harddrive

slackware 10.2
default sata.i kernel 2.4.31

Did you remember to include the framebuffer device and driver for your graphics chip?
I've even forgotten...

Read my thread about DRI (Link in my sig)

actually, i thought it was wierd, because i did include framebuffer device, but now that you write it with that sentence: "framebuffer device and driver for your graphics chip" i'm getting unsure..maybe i have to recompile another one
