I started using Chrome a few weeks back and really like it. It starts up *much* faster on my old laptop than firefox or opera ever have done.

My advice is give it a spin - it's on slackbuilds.org

I use vimprobable2 which is just about the lightest graphical browser you can find (I don't really count links -g as graphical though it technically is), and it uses webkit so it renders pages fairly well and quickly. I have heard uzbl is a little better but it had a serious security issue (which is now plugged but has reduced functionality). I'm not sure if they have figured out how to recover functoinality while avoiding that security issue but the latest development version should be secure and at least as functional as vimprobable2, so I will likely give it a shot in a bit. It should be noted that you need a relatively recent webkit and if you're using stable you need to upgrade gtk+2. It should also be noted that newer webkit than the version used at slackbuilds.org requires a newer libsoup as well, but you would need to use libsoup 2.28.2 at most -- unless it was fixed recently newer webkit cannot compile against anything newer than that. I guess it is a lot of work just for a lightweight browser but I have migrated fully from Firefox to vimprobable2 and only jump back for sites that do not render properly (which are relatively few) or banking, where I feel more comfortable using a supported browser (Firefox). The lightweight webkit browsers have the advantage of using HTML5 video with the h.264 codec (using gst-plugins-* with gstreamer), which Firefox cannot do.

@linus72 & hughszg

Before you give up on ff/sm, have you run them from a terminal for crash clues? Any other debugging?

Just curious....

cheers,

Depends on your definition of light. If you just mean small and fast, Midori is pretty good, has a slackbuild at Slackbuilds.org, and uses Webkit so it's buzzword compliant.

I use Firefox because of the plugins I use, however I consider Chrome and Opera very strong alternatives, especially if you are looking for a fast and light browser.

Would say Opera is my personal favorite
