Fresh install of 12.2 - nothing in dmesg, Xorg.0.log, messages, secure...
I'm not sure if it's every 2 hours, on the button, of if it's more random than that. I get no kernel panic messages, or FATALs, or any indication in any of the logs that anything is amiss.
The PC appears to "go to sleep", but there's no reaction to mouse movement, or keypresses, etc. It doesn't powerdown, it just stops responding.
I have disable acpi; I've tried a couple of different video drivers ("ati", "mach64")
I've just now rebooted with the "vesa" driver.
Frankly, I'm not sure where to look, or what info to provide you fine folks.
The fix suggested does not work always...see my last post in the other thread.
It seems to be quite random....the only time I know for sure it is going to freeze is when attempting to copy dvd with k9copy...and then only certain dvd's.
I am having the devil's own time trying to get to the bottom of this ...including trying to downgtrade the kernel (can't get it to run); installing a complete separate older version system (having problems setting it up also); "cloning" another old system from a different computer (no surprize...it won't run either)....
Will post more later..gotta run right now.
Thanks for your response. I'm currently waiting to see if the crash re-occurs with the "vesa" driver.
I had considered that it may have something to do with X, and running the system without invoking X was amongst my list of todo's.
Unlike what the OP in the referred post suggests, and similar to your experience, the system freezes under virtually no load. It is a "guest" system in one of our spare bedrooms, and whilst it does have both the network scanner & printer attached, it's not heavily used. However, since it does have both those peripherals attached, it defeats its purpose if we have to fire it up every we wish to take advantage.
I did not have memtest86 installed so I have installed it. How do I run it?
command "memtest86" says command not found.
I ran across a reference that said it is to be run at boot time so I rebooted but no hint of "memtest" running.
Just to update that I added the lines found in the other thread to my xorg.conf, but it still freezes. I'll boot with the noapic option and see what happens.
If that proves to be ineffective, (I'll know in a couple of hours), I'll see what happens if I don't invoke X.
I'll run memtest once I determine whether X is involved.

I use a livecd with 'memtest86' as a option. Knoppix has 'memtest' as a boot option. That is the best way to actually utilize the utility. No other memory is being utilized while testing the DRAM.
Well, the problem persists even when X isn't invoked.
10 hrs of memtest results in 0 errors.
So, as much as I'd like to get to the bottom of this, I'm going to revert to 12.1 on that particular box. Since there's another thread that appears to deal with a similar issue, I'll follow that to see if the solution appears.
