Backspace Key doesn't work correctly in Vim in Slack 9.1

When I use Vim in Slackware 9.1, my backspace key does not work correctly.

The backspace key moves the cursor to the left, but doesn't remove the character, and I have to continue typing, which overtypes the characters.

This happens in Vim in CLI mode or in the terminal. It works at the comman prompt and in other applications.

Is there any way to fix this, so the backspace key works as it normally would in a word processor.
