Back with the same old problem

After my last post (A long time ago: 10-18-2004) about running alsaconf screwing up the system upon restart, I have made no headway. For a few months, I had reverted to MDK9.2 for convenience but I really prefer Slack so I reinstalled it today. I haven't run alsaconf nor do I plan on doing so until I feel that I have sufficiently solved the problem.

I am running the default Slack10 kernel, should I install the latest kernel?
Should I try new alsa drivers? The last time I did that, it only caused more problems.
I tried using Swaret but I just got "Failed!" messages.
I'm almost thinking about holding out until 10.1 comes out. that shouldn't be too long should it?

any help will be greatly appreciated.

This is the reason you should keep your ongoing discussion in the existing threads? What kind of soundcard do you have? I'm not going to go search for your other thread, I'm lazy and you should provide the details for us. There are over 150k members here, I read a lot of threads, I can't remember who you are, if I read your other thread or not..

1) i don't understand how alsaconf can screw up the system
2) it's up to you what kernel you want to run...i haven't heard much about the newest release. i've decided to stick with 2.6.7 for a while.
3) did you have alsa compiled into your kernel AND manually add the new drivers?
4) how did swaret fail? did you edit swaret.conf for 'current' and make sure the servers were correct?

My soundcard is an on-board card on an old, no-name Pentium 2 machine. It shows up as Crystal Codec.
The kernel I'm using is the one that is default for Slack 10, 2.4.??
However the Slackware installer sets it up is how the kernel and drivers are set up
Swaret does gives me a "Failed!" message when it tries to access the repositories.

Your sound card:

A- Just for fun, type (as root or SU):

modprobe cs4232

From what I can gather, that is the only Crystal (Cirrus Logic) chip that would be onboard
that comes with the default slack kernel as a module. Any luck?

B- From the info that you provided ( your sound is on-board, & its a 'Crystal') most-likely
it is a CS4235 or CS4236 Cirrus Logic chip. Did you ' lspci ' to see what that says?

So, if you want to research it, go to http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ and look up
your card - Cirrus Logic chipset number - This gives detailed instructions for setting
it up - either one uses the same driver.

Once you've started looking into the matter, and get stuck, let us know what you're
having trouble with.

good luck

p.s. - The better info you provide, the more help others can/will be. There are many variables
when dealing with things like this - so don't be affraid to take time, explain things, and give
details, even if you have to research/work in order to provide the details. Due to the lack of details,
my post is just a shot in the dark trying to help.

I do the best that I can in providing information about my problem, I haven't even spent a year using linux let alone slackware.
Modprobe doesn't give anything, if I change the number it says it can't locate the module.
I have yet to reinstall swaret after the first incident so I do not have a log file.

I will give what you said a shot.

Modprobe shouldn't give any output, if it does, it didn't work. If it doesn't, it loaded the module. Type "lspci" and "lsmod" and post the output here. Also, if possible, provide the name (Manufacture/Model#) of your motherboard. This will help on getting the specs of your on-board chip to make sure you're using the right module. You usally only need to update Alsa drivers for advanced features or a new, previously unsupported card. Being that your mobo is a P2, I doubt this is the case.

From your lspci, you don't appear to have a soundcard at all.
Check to make sure it's enabled in the BIOS.

Also -- try and humor us -- run alsaconf one more time, and post what it says, and how it "screws up" your installation.
