autostarting XWindows

When Linux starts, i don't want to have to login , and then type startx to start xwindows, I would like XWindows to start first, and have it present me with a login screen, how do I do this?

Open up the /etc/inittab file and change the run level from 3 to 4.

great, i did that, but now instead of autostarting to KDE, it changed to GNOME, with a different resolution , instead of a 1024x768 100Hz res, how do I get a KDE login with 1024x768 100Hz ?

Open the /etc/rc.d/rc.4 file and comment out the 3 lines that start GDM.

Another easy way is to leave it so it starts with runlevel 3, and then add to /etc/rc.d/rc.local
gdm
That will start up your gdm, and then you can choose your session accordingly. If you don't have gdm on there, do kdm.

1. Open KDE system guard.
2. Kill off Nautilus (possibly) and any other gnome-related processes (stuff that doesn't have "kdeinit" in them)
3. Don't touch Nautilus again ;)

Unless you mean, you can't use KDE at all, Gnome starts up. In KDM, there's a desktop selection manager underneath your password.

ok, i looked in the menu before logging in , and got back to kde, it seems i can just choose whatever desktop i want before logging in, but GNOME seems to be the default, and I want to make KDE the default so i won't have to choose KDE eachtime, how do I make KDE the default for the session?
