Slack9.1: Aureal problems with ALSA

I just switched my computer over to Linux full time a couple weeks ago with the aid of JAMD. While certainly nice, fast, and easy to use, it wasn't as flexable as I wanted, so I decided to wipe it out and give Slackware 9.1 a try.

Thanks to my Dell's Aureal Vortex 1 sound card, I've never had sound in Linux. But according to the sf.net project for the Aureal cards, it is now supported in ALSA 0.97b and above. So with high hopes I used Swaret to upgrade alsa to 0.98.

Unfortunately I need to do more it seems, as I still get all the same errors as before. alsaconf couldn't find anything.

I've done a number of searches here at LQ, and tried a few suggestions that sounded like they would apply, without success. The closest one I found to my problem was this one:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...readid=101926&

However I am not having much luck with it.

When I get to the part where he says "Next you can use modprobe snd-au8810." I get the following:

# modprobe snd-au8810
Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.4.22/modules.dep
modprobe: Can't locate module snd-au8810

Am I even on the right track?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Ok, I looked through the alsa documentation and it looks like I missed something important by using swaret so I went back and compiled the alsa drivers myself.
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...&module=au8820

Everything went fine till I did a modprobe snd-au8820

Then I got this:
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/snd-au8820.o: unresolved symbol snd_mpu401_uart_interrupt
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/snd-au8820.o: unresolved symbol snd_ac97_mixer
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/snd-au8820.o: unresolved symbol snd_mpu401_uart_new
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/snd-au8820.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/snd-au8820.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/sound/pci/au88x0/snd-au8820.o: insmod snd-au8820 failed

And if I try to use alsamixer I still get:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

Ok, with yet more searching I found what I needed:
http://www.mail-archive.com/alsa-dev.../msg09813.html

Worked like a charm.
