i had a problem a while back with my audio(http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...s4237b-697530/). well it was never completely solved. I managed to burn all the slackware 12.2 cds, reinstalled, but i can only play audio from the shell, if i try to play any audio while X11 is running the computer hangs. unfortunately i have no error logs to refer to(that I know of). And Ive run out of troubleshooting ideas.
Are you running on runlevel 3 or 4? If you are running on runlevel 4, then you need to add yourself to the audio group I think. Also, add yourself to the video group for the heck of it. Since I'm at work right now, I can't check my home profile, so I can't think which groups I'm on, other than plugdev. Also, what Window Manager are you running? KDE?
Ok, so your profile works ok with xfce until trying to use sound, and it hangs during startup on kde? Correct?
correct, if i start kde after running alsaconf it hangs about where it normaly gives me an error about /dev/dsp missing, and the same thing if im running xfce and start a kde based program. xfce only hangs if i try to play sound.
Are you only having problems when logged in as a regular user? Have you tried playing sounds as root on KDE/XFCE? Go ahead and add yourself to the wheel, floopy, audio, video, cdrom and plugdev groups. Log out and log back in for the changes to take effect. Reboot if you want to be %100 sure. If you are still having problems with sounds when logged in as root, then I think that you may have a bad sound card. I'm assuming that you already ran alsaconf since you could play sounds through the command line, correct? Also, is this an on board sound card, or a separate PCI card?
im running as root always. its onboard cs4737b i can only get it working in command line with the cs4732 drivers. the sound card works fine(or it did before i took windows xp off)

Hmmm...add another user to the system. Then add that user to all those groups that I wrote in the previous post. Did you run alsactl store after running alsaconf? As a side note, it's never a good idea to run as root for longer than needed. I'm sure you already knew that though.
already seen that and several similar links. but all that would do is help me make the audio work. the audio works, i just cant use it with the xserver or it hangs the computer and im forced to do a hard reboot.
Eh...I'm just stumped too!! The only other thing that I can think of is maybe download the latest kernel and custom build it. Have you tried a different version of Slackware or any other version of Linux on the same computer?
