I used k3b to to convert some mp3's to wave and burn an audio cd. Everything went exceptionally well. In fact, it went so fast that I didn't believe it had actually worked so I wanted to test the cd.......but I can't find a way to play an audio cd in a full slackware 13 installation. I know the cd is good because I finally took it out to the car, convinced it HAD to be a bad burn. So what am I missing here? Kaudiocreator sees the tracks on the cd so that I could rip them, but it's the only program I can find that will even acknowledge that there is a disk in the drive.
I've tried everything under multimedia. Audacious, mplayer, xine, etc....Is there something maybe manually I need to set up? The plugged in devices icon understands that there is an audio cd inserted, but I can't even navigate to the cd and view the tracks. I don't have this problem with say the slackDVD in the same drive. I can reboot into mandriva and play the cd with kscd (not included in slack13), so I'm stumped.
AudioCDs do not actually contain a file sytem to browse. If you want to browse the the disc use kioslave I listed above, type audiocd:// in the location bar of either Dolphin or Konq.
Open your choice of media player and chose the option to play disc, open audio cd, what ever they call it. I am currently listening to an AudioCD with Amarok. When an AudioCD is inserted, Amarok will show the disc on left hand side.
I've found if you don't have the device notifier in the kde panel, you'd never know something such as a cd was plugged in. On my end here, it shows a cd plugged in, and says something like '3 actions' I click that, and then the kde3 type of dialog opens up offering me the options. ------- Amarok I noticed, if amarok is closed, even tho I say play with amarok it doesn't. If amarok is open I can get it to work. If the cd was in the drive, and amarok was closed, the only way I found to play the cd is to use 'Amarok' -> 'Play Media' and a file browser opens up, and I just typed '/dev/cdrom' and hit enter and it populated the media collection, then I have to add it to playlist. ------- Audacious go into preferences and then plugins, be sure plugin is active for cd rom. you can double click the plugin to configure any special requirements. once you're out of preferences, just right click on the main window, click on 'plugin services' then 'add cd' and it will populate the playlist. -------- xmms same was as before , you have to *love* xmms --------general note: check in system settings on the 'advanced tab' and check the items in there, including the 'device actions' and 'audio cds' icon. Of note, I have _nothing_ in my /etc/fstab for the cd. gotta go, gnome's almost done building

To add to that (Control Center, KDE Components, Service Manager, KDED Media Manager and Media Notifier Daemon services), check if you have $HOME/.kde/share/config/medianotifierrc. If you do, you might have some time in the past disabled automatic notifications for certain types of actions. You can safely rename or delete the file.
You also might want to enable both the Mounted Removable Medium and Unmounted Removable Medium desktop icons. Enable these options in the Control Center, Desktop, Behavior. Enabling these icons will provide you visual feedback on the desktop whether KDE recognizes the drives.
