I just installed Audacity from Alien Bob's packages, but it won't launch. Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

I'm not sure what to make of that.

you should also install the libjack library

I believe alien has a ready package:
http://connie.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/jack/

Edit: After you install Jack, it may ask for some other packages too. Try to install all of them.

That did it. Funny, Audacity never used to require jack...

JACK is an optional dependency of Audacity. I'm assuming Alien Bob built the package with JACK installed so it picked up the dependency. If you compiled it from source it almost certainly would not require JACK.
