ATI radeon driver fullscreen video problems.

Hi,

I am successfully running the radeon driver by having run the xorgsetup. Everything runs fine except for the fact that videos never scale to fullscreen in mplayer, they remain their original size. Any idea how to fix that?

Thank you.

I have an HD4850 and running slackware 14 64bits.

Have you tried just running without creating an xorg.conf file?
IIRC, you don't need to use one, X11 will detect your card as radeon and load the driver without user interaction.

So really, pressing "f" while mplayer is running does nothing?

Make sure that mplayer is using the xv output video driver.
You can try it on the command line:
Code:

mplayer -vo xv video_file
The toggle button for fullscreen mode is the letter "f".

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

@STDOUBT
Yes without an xorg.conf the videos work fine, however my hardware acceleration sucks, I have like 59FPS, with the xorg.conf and specifying the radeon driver I reach 900FPS.

@414N
I have tried it and it seems there is an error with xv.
Code:

[VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
[VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read
[VO_XV] DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
[VO_XV] See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers.
[VO_XV] Try -vo x11.
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.

There seems to be a bunch of video output I could try so I will test them to see if one of them works.

Report also what xvinfo outputs, please ;)

Are you trying to use glxgears as a benchmark? If so, then when everything is working properly, you won't get anything higher than your screen refresh rate (probably 60 Hz). Chances are you might be disabling v-sync with your custom xorg.conf leading to the 900 FPS result.

Try X with and without the xorg.conf and look for any error messages in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log

You might find the reason things are breaking in there.

Xv should definitely work on your GPU out of the box. Please show us your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Hi,

When running with no xorg.conf, everything is fine, xvinfo works and glxgears gives me a 60FPS. I am staying with this configuration for now.

@octoberblu3
Thank you for the explanation on the refresh rate, that would explain it.

Is there a way to unlock the frame rate when running opengl application?

On a side note there was no errors in the Xorg.0.log when running with a xorg.conf file.

414N 12-13-2012 04:43 AM

You can unlock the frame rate by setting the "vblank_mode" environment variable to any value before running an OpenGL application, like
Code:

vblank_mode=0 glxgears
However, most of the times this is just a good way to waste some power.
Also, please report your Xorg.0.log file (between code tags, please) so we can see why xv isn't working out of the box for you.
