Post ATI 8.29.6 driver working...(?) well... i think so

Hi all.
I've got an ATI Radeon 9600 pro using 8.29.6 proprietary driver.
I cant make it work under 2.4.31 so i compile 2.6.17 with the folowing options

* Loadable module support -> Enable loadable module support: ENABLED
* Loadable module support -> Module unloading: ENABLED
* Loadable module support -> Automatic kernel module loading: ENABLED
* File systems -> Pseudo filesystems -> Virtual memory file system support: ENABLED
* Processor type and features -> MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support: ENABLED
* Device drivers -> Character Devices -> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support): MODULE
* Device drivers -> Character Devices -> (pick the correct AGP chipset option from the list, depending on your motherboard): MODULE
* Device drivers -> Character Devices -> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support): DISABLED

Add to fstab
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0

Reboot, sh ati-driver-instaler-8.29.6.run, everything goes fine, no errors while install.

Reboot, startx and check if driver is working. So this is what i get:

Code:
bash-3.00$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9600 Generic
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6065 (8.29.6)
Driver seems to be working fine.

Code:
bash-3.00$ glxinfo

Direct Rendering is working but what about glxgears?

Code:
bash-3.00$ glxgears
471 frames in 5.0 seconds = 94.200 FPS
521 frames in 5.0 seconds = 104.200 FPS
512 frames in 5.0 seconds = 102.400 FPS
523 frames in 5.0 seconds = 104.600 FPS
Only 104 FPS ????

Every screensaver works fine with no problems and while playing True Combat Elite fps is unstable giving frames between 90-40 fps. When i play it under window$ fps are always 90.
There's got to be someting wrong with this, just dont know what. I always use the same kernel config and with later drivers it gave me 3000+ fps in glxgears.

Can anyone help me out on this? Who has an ATI card and uses ati's proprietary driver how did you installed it? Maybe my installing method is wrong.

Thanks in advance.

ATI changed the way that glxgears reports, you will be so slow now that you think that you have no DRI but you actually will.

Check out this thread here on the forums which also gives you a link to understanding why glxgears is supposedly "nfg" for us now.

Doesn't ATI have it's own version of glxgears? (I had a 9800 a while back, but I'm using pci-express now (nvidia)). It's called f??_glxgears or something like that...should be supplied with the driver, I think. I seem to recall that glxgears worked OK for me though (~4900fps).

Just a small update

I've downgraded to 8.26.18
glxgears gives 3000+ fps and fgl_glxgears goes little more than 500 fps. But while playing (tc:e) fps is still very unstable (still ranging from 40 to 90 fps ) and perfomance is not so good.

So i've reinstalled 8.29.6. glxgears just gives 100 fps but fgl_glxgears still gives 500 fps.

I guess the result is the latest driver is installed and working but glxgears dosent like fglrx driver.

wait for new drivers or spend more time on this ?

.... guess i'll wait

Bye

so far, these drivers are the best I've seen yet! quake and ut2004 are almost there! I might start gaming in linux now.

the way I understand the ATI statement on Rage3D and by others, I believe (?) this means that glxgears is not a good indicator / measurement tool for grading your 3d performance. I suspect this is why ATI distributes their own tool.

In addition, I've noticed that regardless of the driver version, ATI's tool is usually consistent in numbers regardless of what drivers I use.

The drivers you mentioned were really bad performer's for me, the 8.26... I liked the 8.27 and the new one's are really good for the fact that they support the latest xorg..which is good as we're going to need this on slack 11.

The 8.29 I have had one video melt down while playing UT2004. But surprisingly, the video reset itself as I was playing...it got really slow in the game...but kept going I was amazed it didnt take down the game and crash it.

These 8.29 are doing pretty good for me also in UT2004, I can finally minimize the game, adn not have the KDE or window manager enviornment all super super bright!

As Old_Fogie says, glxgears is not a good measure of performance, especially on radeons it seems. glxgears renders a huge number of frames every seconds which is quite unlike the behaviour of an actual game (glxgears performance will actually drop on an SLI setup, due to the lag caused by this massive flurry of frames).

Don't worry about glxgears, games are always the best indication of performance.

Quote:

fps will always vary depending on complexity of the scene. 40fps is generally acceptable. My ut2004 fps generally ranges from 30-70 on a 6200, but still remains playable (it only becomes jerky (<25fps) on very heavy levels like DoubleDamage and GrassyKnoll). As long as your minimum fps is acceptable, you should be OK.

glxgears is not thw way to see if DRI is working fine the best way to test is with games (theyr not just for fun :P).
With 11.0 it seems to go smoother now, at least in the game it looks like it

Just one more thing, I've been messing arround with translucency just to see the eyecandy and the strange thing is that enabeling composite fglrx does not work.

fglrxinfo says its using Mesa drivers. Strange.

How can I make translucency work? (The correct way)

hmmm... maybe this needs a new post.

Unfortunately, ATI user's to the best of my knowledge can NOT use the fancy translucency / composite

I too find slackware 11 better for games now, I kind of had this feeling as i compared my slackware 10.2 to suse10.1 gm and ubuntu 6.06 when we only had hopes for 11 the newer xorg is better in ut2004 for me. tho the sound got worse, i had to make my own openal.

Here's some numbers for my system:

Ok the old drivers: 8.26
on slackware 10.2

fogie@pooter:~$ fgl_glxgears -fbo
Using GL_EXT_framebuffer_object
2990 frames in 5.0 seconds = 598.000 FPS
3808 frames in 5.0 seconds = 761.600 FPS
3812 frames in 5.0 seconds = 762.400 FPS

fogie@pooter:~$ glxgears
18365 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3673.000 FPS
21352 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4270.400 FPS
21348 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4269.600 FPS

summary: glxgears far supercedes fgl_glxgears.

8.26.xx

fogie@pooter:~$ fgl_glxgears -fbo
Using GL_EXT_framebuffer_object
4458 frames in 5.0 seconds = 891.600 FPS
4451 frames in 5.0 seconds = 890.200 FPS
4477 frames in 5.0 seconds = 895.400 FPS

fogie@pooter::~$ glxgears
4035 frames in 5.0 seconds = 807.000 FPS
5001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.200 FPS
4999 frames in 5.0 seconds = 999.800 FPS
4984 frames in 5.0 seconds = 996.800 FPS

summary: about the same, these drivers worked really well for me visually, etc.

drivers: 8.27

fogie@pooter:~$ fgl_glxgears -fbo
Using GL_EXT_framebuffer_object
4333 frames in 5.0 seconds = 866.600 FPS
4447 frames in 5.0 seconds = 889.400 FPS
4488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 897.600 FPS
4441 frames in 5.0 seconds = 888.200 FPS
4488 frames in 5.0 seconds = 897.600 FPS
4429 frames in 5.0 seconds = 885.800 FPS
4478 frames in 5.0 seconds = 895.600 FPS

fogie@pooter:~$ glxgears
4807 frames in 5.0 seconds = 961.400 FPS
5001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.200 FPS
5001 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.200 FPS
5000 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.000 FPS

summary: fgl & glxgears close, but these drivers were very laggy and gave me a headache or I didnt have enough coffee.

now slackware 11.0 numbers:

drivers: 8.29
fogie@pooter:~$ fgl_glxgears -fbo
Using GL_EXT_framebuffer_object
1188 frames in 5.0 seconds = 237.600 FPS
1250 frames in 5.0 seconds = 250.000 FPS

fogie@pooter:~$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
2698 frames in 5.0 seconds = 539.600 FPS
2845 frames in 5.0 seconds = 569.000 FPS
2810 frames in 5.0 seconds = 562.000 FPS

fogie@pooter:~$ glxgears
1579 frames in 5.0 seconds = 315.699 FPS
1606 frames in 5.0 seconds = 321.180 FPS

summary: new version of slackware, best drivers to date. -fbo yields half the value they once did & my glxgears are now 1/5 what they used to be?

End result, none of these numbers mean anything to me

My numbers:

ATI 9600 Pro with 8.29.6

bash-3.1$ fgl_glxgears -fbo
Using GL_EXT_framebuffer_object
608 frames in 5.0 seconds = 121.600 FPS
500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 100.000 FPS
500 frames in 5.0 seconds = 100.000 FPS

bash-3.1$ fgl_glxgears
Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
2491 frames in 5.0 seconds = 498.200 FPS
2561 frames in 5.0 seconds = 512.200 FPS
2585 frames in 5.0 seconds = 517.000 FPS
2565 frames in 5.0 seconds = 513.000 FPS

bash-3.1$ glxgears
736 frames in 5.0 seconds = 147.163 FPS
701 frames in 5.0 seconds = 139.950 FPS
725 frames in 5.0 seconds = 144.965 FPS
716 frames in 5.0 seconds = 142.946 FPS
738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 147.554 FPS
715 frames in 5.0 seconds = 142.759 FPS
726 frames in 5.0 seconds = 145.198 FPS
739 frames in 5.0 seconds = 147.796 FPS
742 frames in 5.0 seconds = 148.111 FPS

These also don't mean anything to me except to compare with newer drivers. As for previous drivers the only numbers i remeber is that glxgears gave 3000+ fps.

I still think i'm missing something

Can you post ur gear just to compare? hardware and numbers.

My gear:
Intel Pentium 4 2.40Ghz
Asus ATI 9600 Pro
512 RAM

Hi Hyakutake,

I have amd 2500+ overclocked so it uses a 400 FSB instead of 333 mhz FSB. ATi Radeon 9600xt - not overlocked. 2x512mb value ram 400 FSB @ 2.5,3,3,6 timings = D

My cpu is running @ 2.2 GHz, @ 99 deg F

To bad there is no site for ATI/Linux drivers like their used to be a 'mad onion' web site that you can post resuls for 3dmark scores in the windows world.

Do you know if there is any other to see if DRI is enabled with nvidia cards? Except glxgears and testing thru games?

The equivelent to fgl_glxgears on nvidia.

Yeah. Try
Code:
glxinfo | grep direct
If it says 'Yes' dri/accel is working.

For more info, check out the DRI link in my sig...

Hi cwwilson721.

Not checking out if DRI is enabled with nvidia cards but a way to test performance - without games or glxgears.
