Aspire wireless killed by current

I just installed current to my Acer Aspire one 110 netbook that wasrunning 13.1 just fine until this morning. Everything works except the wireless connection.
I cannot set the wlan device to go "up", iwlist scan returns "network is down" and ifconfig wlan0 up returns "Operation not possible due to rf-kill".
Using the hardware switch makes no difference (it was working before upgrading). I made a clear install. The wlan devices uses the ath5k driver.
Any ideas on how to proceed?

Edit: I installed the madwifi driver and nothing changed. After following a "google suggestion" to remove all power from the netbook and try again i can connect using the madwifi driver but not using the ath5k. Still I cannot get the switch to work.

Post the output of
Code:
cat /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill*/state
If it isn't 1, you can try changing it as root
Code:
echo 1 > /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill*/state

Thanks for answering, my /sys/class/rfkill directory is empty.
rfkill list all also returns nothing.

Hi,

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

The reason for the move to '-current' was?
'-current' is a development tree for Slackware.
I'm not being smart here but curious as to the reasoning?

Well, I've "traditionally" used the device for trying out -current. The 13.1 version it was running was kind of an "evolution" of the pre-13.1 -current and pre-13 before that. What I did differently this time was making a clean install.

Incidentally, i tried an ubuntu 10.10 live usb with the netbook and it has the same issues. A kernel thing perhaps... Still looking!

Hi,

Try looking at the wiki: " Arch Linux (or Arch) is a Linux distribution intended to be lightweight and simple".

I believe that netbooks have been addressed by Arch.

Slackware can be used but I don't have a netbook at this time to experiment with. My wife does but that one is used for her administration work. I'm sure she wouldn't mind my use but I won't test that area. Plus, I don't experiment on production or working support equipment. Bad habit to start!

Edit: Sorry if the hint seemed to mean to switch. My meaning was to use the wiki for aid/help by finding useful information to solve the Slackware problem.

It might be the kernel version. I've found, for example, that support for my wireless card is broken in kernel 2.6.35. It works in every version of the kernel up until 2.6.35. I haven't tried it with 2.6.36 yet/

I suggested the wiki to help find potential aids. Not to switch for Slackware.
