There is no way anyone can gather accurate statistics on the use of linux.
However, there are some effords on the internet that, in a way, try to gather *some* statistics. The only ones I can think of for the moment are: the linux counter
http://counter.li.org (please get yourself counted, so there's at least one more slack user in the stats), and distrowatch having a rank of wich distro's page at the site has had the most hits.
But remember, you cannot draw any conclusions from these stats
