All-righty, then. The deed is done, and I am in KDE-4.3.1. This time, I got it right. The problem(s) with Dolphin and Konqueror have disappeared. Both Dolphin and Konqueror are now blazing fast compared to 4.2.4. I am actually really enjoying this.
I had forgotten that I had built a package for knemo, but this upgrade has had no effect on knemo. It still is functioning normally. The K Menu is just a bit different, with System Settings now found in Settings and not System. There may be others, but that's not a big deal. My taskbar is not transparent, and I can't seem to remember where to change that, but I haven't looked too hard yet. The taskbar itself is better looking. I have a dozen apps open, and cpu usage is very quiet. All buttons are active and all apps jump to the top when called. These include OpenOffice, the Gimp, k3b, and 9 others. No problems switching. Oh yea, and I had that goofy Amor running around the desktop as well. So far, so good. |
I agree, I switched to 4.3.1 about a week ago, and all the problems I had with 4.2.4 are now gone, so I am happy. The only thing I had a problem with was I had to recompile the kde-workspace package to re-enable compiz wallpaper support.

I did the upgrade at runlevel 3, but I didn't delete or move my ~/.kde beforehand. However, everything is OK, so the outcome - good or bad - might depend on what's in there. ?.
|
i have also upgraded 4.3.1 and have had no issues what so ever, downloaded to tmp/ upgradepkg --install-new *.t?z
i did rm -r ~/.kde though just to be sure. dolphin seems really fast and the amount of memory overhead has also been reduced. it seems so much more snappier now, really pleased with this upgrade thanks for all the guidance in the previous posts cheers |
Upgraded to 4.3.1 with upgradepkg --install-new *txz, no problems whatsoever. Thanks very much for the packages, great job!

I tried out Amarok this morning. No problems with it, except that the playlist was missing. The collection was still there, just no playlists. Easy enough to redo. The computer runs 24/7, so I was wondering what a few hours of idle time would do, but it snapped back to life this morning with no problems.
Even nepomukitymuk seems to behave with this release. At least, I have had no problems yet related to nappymuk, or any other problems with anything. I'm still diligently looking. I may crash this puppy yet! :) |
I just rebooted back to init 4. Since I am the only user on this machine, its set to go straight to the desktop (KDE). No login or password required. That worked perfectly just like it has in any other KDE version. Still good to go.
|
Not cool. K3B is not working with kde4.3.1 library. It just hangs at 100% and stays that way for minutes. I tried burning an ISO image on a Blank DVD and it burnt till 100% within 14mins and then stayed that way for 30mins. Then I thought my DVD or ISO maybe corrupt so I tried burning it on a DVD-rw, same thing. So I switched to windows and tried burning and it worked. Can anyone please check this out with a DVD-rw?
|
I had the same problem with k3b and 4.2.4. I simply used growisofs and the cli to burn iso images. K3b is just not yet ready.

I've installed KDE 4.3.1 and, so far, all but one of the problems I've was having with 4.2.4 have disappeared. Again, thanks. |

My conclusion is that it is not a problem of the burn process as such, but just one of the GUI not being synchronised with the burn process precisely enough, but it's just a guess. gargamel |
I can use the DVD, thanks gargamel I almost threw it out. :D However its still a problem. The CD keeps on rotating after burn process 100% completed in an infinite loop. This is definitely an issue. Not many people will like the idea of manually interrupting a burn process and ejecting the CD. In my case I had to reboot the system to get the CD out since the tray was locked.
Code:
killall k3b && eject -T |

Don't mean to be overly paranoid, but can these packages be trusted or what? |

Of course, now that I've got it installed, 4.3.2 will be release tomorrow or the next day. :) |
Well, there seem to be x86 packages here:
http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/...ges/4.3.1/x86/ I made this list of packages... it was a real pain in the *** to make this. Just save it as a plain text file, then run wget --input-file=yourfilename in the dir where you saved the file, it will download them all to that dir (unless you configured wget a default dir) Code:
http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/kde/kde4-packages/4.3.1/x86/PyQt-4.5.4-i686-1.txz |
Use wget -r http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/...ges/4.3.1/x86/ and You'll be happy not to write such files all day long, Dude :D
See the manpage of wget for more useful commands of recursive downloading. It works, if the server serve directory indexes, and most apaches do :) |

I have also installed the 4.3.1 packages cause I had problems with plasma crashes after running some apps.
no problems so far, for me it seams that kde4.3.1 is the first usable version of kde4 (and I like it) |
i upgraded to kde 4.3.1 with these packages a few days back and kde seems to work gr8. no real issues.
Major kudos to vbatts > whoever he is? |

while kde 4.3.1 solves some problems on my pc it opens others on my laptop. and a view funny things also, like where have the option to enable/disable sounds for login logout gone? I was able to turn off sounds for log in/out with 4.2.?, but I can't find the options for this in kde 4.3.1 but in realty this isn't funny any more. I think I have spent already to much hours with this software and following things like this http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172023 I think I better begin to use something else than kde. |
En/disabling the sound for logging in/out (among other things) can be set at System configuration --> Notifications --> System notification --> Applications --> Event source --> etc...
BTW, the words can be slightly different, because my KDE is in Dutch, but you'll probably find it. :) |

I looked under kde window manager, but it's in system notificatins. it was definitely easier when I was a bit ill and had a lot of time just stare to the screen, klicking here and klicking there... |

I wouldn't recommend using just "wget -r", it will download the whole site. Use the list or add extra parameters to wget to prevent it from doing this (sorry I'm too lazy to look it up in the man page :)).
Edit: tramni1980 already gave the answer, it's the "-np" option you need. |
wget -r -np -nd --accept=txz http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/.../4.3.1/x86_64/

4.3.1 seems to be stable on 13 -stable. Is there any hint of it showing up in changelog or possibly -current?

Slackware(64) KDE 4.3.2
Slackware(64) KDE 4.3.2 packages available from vbatts (Thanks!) :

anyone make 4.3.2 x86
|
has anyone tried the 4.3.2 x86_64 packages yet?..
|
I have and they didn't work for me. KDE would boot up with a plasma crash and completely white background. I deleted my .kde and tried again with the same result. I didn't bother with the logs I just put 4.3.1 back on.
|
Quote:
thanks for the heads up buddy |
I had the same result as Daedra, and reinstalled 4.3.1. I don't think that all the necessary packages are present yet. Just have to keep looking for a few days.

I forgot this first and while it sort of works gives you a nice WSON[1], but a quick upgrade to -current later and all works fine. I still prefer XFCE though. :) [1]: White Screen of Nowt. |

FWIW, and for those who don't know, cardinal is the box that I co-own with Alan Hicks, /dev/rob0, AthlonRob, Fred Emmott, and a few others have accounts on there (XGizzmo, vbatts, Chess Griffin, PiterPUNK, alienBOB). Batts has root on cardinal, so that should tell you a bit about how trustworthy he is. :-) |
the 4.3.2 packages are uploaded now for i686 and x86_64 to http://cardinal.lizella.net/~vbatts/kde/kde4-packages/ and rsync://cardinal.lizella.net/vbatts/kde4-packages/
there's a bit of a README as well ;) |

Thank you very much for taking the time to compile these KDE packages. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! :hattip: Edit in: I should qualify this and say the 4.3.1 packages run beautifully, but since I'm using Slackware64 "stable" the 4.3.2 packages are not useable as they were built for 'current.' |
Are there KDE-4.3.2 packages for Slackware-13.0 -stable? So long as I can see these packages are for 13.0 -current and there are problems if run on -stable.
Regards, Martin |
tnx also from me vbatts :)
running 4.3.2 on current nice and smooth... |
4.3.1 is still running trouble-free on 13.0 (stable). Thanks, vbatts.
|
Just installed 4.3.2 on -current and it works great. Thanks vbatts.
