"append is illegal in vi mode"


hi,
i have slackware 10. i open a new file in vi and want to append to it. but after i do ":a" or ":.a" it says "append is illegal in vi mode."
what's going on?

My best suggestion to get better support in vi, well not vi, because i recommend you to use vim. Before using it copy /usr/share/vim/vim63/vimrc_example.vim to ~/.vimrc

i haven't copied the vimrc_example to .vimrc, but a quick try with vim allows me to append. thanks.

If you simply want to append text after that point in the file, the command is "a", not ":a"

If you want to append an existing other file called filename after that point, the command is ":read filename" or simply ":r filename"
