apache + php + openldap = my big frustration :(

hi there all of you!
i'am trying to get apache + php + openldap to work.. well apache and php i had downloaded and installed with swaret. than i compiled openldap. then i found, that to get php to work with ldap it must be configured with --with-ldap option. i was too afraid to compile php [in fact i was afraid, that php will install somewhere else than the one from the .tgz and everything will not work]. so i searched the google for ldap.so, found it and puted it into /usr/lib/php/extensions. then [in the /etc/apache/php.ini file] i wrote :
extension=ldap.so

now:
/etc/rc.d/rc.httpd.start

it puts me some info on the screen that there is no libldap.so.2. so i checked /usr/local/src/openldap/libraries/libldap/.libs and copied everything into /lib. than i symlinked libldap.so to libldap.so.2

that didn't solve the problem though

i'm so frustrated, i can't get it to work.. do You have an idea what i am doing wrong? I would be gratefull for any form of response..

thanks
p.s. sorry for my english :/

p.p.s i also tried to compile php. so:
./configure --with-ldap
make
checkinstall

i opened the .tgz and there was no directory called ldap in /ext/.

i'm afraid that when i will install that new compiled php, it will install somwhere else ald everything will go to hell.. :/

It seems that your big frustration is due to your lack of curiosity. It's ok to break things, and poke around. That's the whole fun of running Linux.

If I were you, I'd find a Apache with PHP compile guide, and use that. Just add the ldap arguments you need.

I've personally never compiled ldap on Linux, I've only used PHP & LDAP on IIS to access Active Directory at work.

Here's a good tutorial, just take what you need from it:

If you want to rebuild Slackware packages properly, it would be best to use the SlackBuild script that Pat provides, and make any changes to that - that way you'll get a proper PHP package with LDAP.

SlackBuild and sources for PHP can be found on any Slackware mirror, such as this one:
ftp://ftp.scarlet.be/pub/slackware/s.../source/n/php/
