Just a couple of points to add.

1) Re: rc.firewall - I'm currently using KMyFirewall to configure iptables, it has bundled in NAT / Masquerading settings (ICS in MSWin terms) and seems quite nice. Grc.com reports stealth mode for all ports at least and I can surf from either my Slack box or the eth0 connected WinXP. I previously used Guarddog too (which has a companing called Guidedog for NAT, etc.).

2) You can nmap a localhost (eg 127.0.0.1). Try it with and without your firewall, just do "iptables -F" to remove all rules, then run rc.firewall again to re-enable.

3) Just getting back in to KDE and so am using KlamAV with ClamAV as it integrates with Kmail (as do Sophos and F-prot I think).

HTH somebody.

They (gentoo, BSD) dont tell you how to start after you reboot. Oh and I didnt like their brand of cfdisk either. Gosh, it must have wanted to make 1000 partitions...for various items, argh.

I have found that FreeBSD struggles with the new state of art hardware. Linux has nVidia drivers for i386 and AMD machines. But only for i386 in FreeBSD. Both can get a ready to use PC with just two disks. I was disappointed that Pat dropped the Gnome desktop, though. FreeBSD didn't like my built-in NIC.

I was looking around their (FBSD) site and stumbled across the 6.1 Release ISO's. Now I am installing 6.1, so that should take care of my KDE problem. :D

I let the installer set up the partitions so I know how the layout is suppose to look, then I adjust them to my liking. Nothing worst than setting up a 512K var (tmp?) partition and have the install blow out just before the reboot prompt. I picked up FreeBSD at 5.4 it sets up just 4 partitions (slices) and a swap space (same with 6.0 and 6.1). A lot more neater.

As far as booting goes, I kept and will always keep, a slackware partition, if anything for lilo. (That should keep us from getting bounced to the BSD forums. :)

I liked using the KlamAV when I used Mepis. I wish that front end was in slack. I tried a package for it from linuxpackages but it didnt work for me. I'm going to try and compile it if I can find the d/load page for it and put it on different pc. I'd like to have 2 different companies protection, so if one is slow to pick up a virus and the other has it, etc.

The only thing with clam-av that I noticed, and it's probably becuase it is a highly used program, and they are very free with information and disclose their errors publicly, I notice that many of the upgrades that they give to the clam-av itself is for buffer *runs, leaks, etc. And I have to learn more about uninstall reinstall in linux first more before I use that solely as my desktop virus app. They have a lot of patches, etc it appears for the AV application itself.

Have you been able to get the real-time virus scanning going with clam-av? using the Dazuko module?

Just as a hint, I also have a package for ClamAV ... now that I think of it, I should update it to the latest release.

Cheers, Eric

Now, mplayer is a package I have been dabbling with for years now, and the reason I never actually published one is caused by the fact that I am not satisfied with any way to solve mplayer's dependencies and still get a useful player. I mean, you can stick a thousand codecs in it's behind, but who wants all of those? I'd like to know what would *really* be welcomed as dependencies.

The mutagenix guys have actually asked to reform my repository so that it is slapt-get friendly (they want my packages as one of their repositories in Mutagenix installer apparently), that's why you now see all the extra files. So, I'll have a look at their gparted gui. Should be applicable to any Slackware box without modifications as far as I understand.

Very nice to hear. That mutagenix has a permanent spot on my desk these days, it really is a nice cd to boot up on, and fix if I broke something and cant get into X or to a cli. I also had a buddy of mine try it as first time to linux he like it alot, your packages will truly help them out.

The only thing with mutagenix that I see as negative is they run you as root, with networking and everyone says that is bad. Other than that mutagenix is awesome.

Old_Fogie 05-09-2006 03:47 PM

Oh and regarding the player, it would be nice if the 'noobed' it up a little.
