Quick question. I'm buying a new Desktop PC soon and I have heard that there are some problems using AMD with slackware. The processor I'm planning on getting is:

Dual-Core AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz 2x512KB Cache (89W)

Are there any significant problems I could encounter?

I have two computers, one with AMD Athlon 64 3800(single core) and one with Athlon XP 2400+(also single core). One use Slackware 11 (server) and the other use Slackware current.
Never had any problems with them.

Where did you hear this?

I have an Athlon64 dual core and single core and one AthlonXP. They run Slack quite well. Where did you hear that? The only thing I could see someone having an issue with would be a driver issue for a chipset, but usually a recompile will take care of that. Happy Slacking!:study:

I've always had an AMD processor in my machine and never had any problems with Slackware. Currently using a Sempron 64 3400+ (I think!).

Have four machines with AMD processors, no problem with any linux distro.

No problems here with a Sempron 2600+.

No particular distro can cause problems with any processor so long as the kernel supports it.

Perhaps you meant to say slamd64, an unofficial 64-bit port of Slackware? Official Slackware will run in 32-bit mode and is as stable as anything else (if not more).

No problems here with my Athlon XP2000 (the perfect processor for Slack, btw) :cool:

edit multiple amd athelon machines single and dual core.

My notebook AMD Turion 64 x2 Runs just fine both with Slack and XP, no problems here either.

You shouldn't believe everything that you hear ...

Slackware will run fine ... and for better performance you may want to consider slamd64 (unofficial 64-bit Slackware), although it may be difficult to get some things like 32-bit flash player working in it.

Since AMD is fully compatible with Intel Architecture therefore you can use any Linux that supports that family. BTW, Slackware Linux supports the Intel family among others.
