...after you make your alsamixer changes, you have to save settings by running "alsactl store."

These three commands need to be run as root at a terminal prompt.

#alsaconf

#alsamixer

#alsactl store

*Note- when you run #alsamixer you need to un-mute your sound and mic. Press on the Esc key to exit alsamixer.

Are you root when you run these commands?

Um...Yes to what? Did you get it working or did you mean you were running the alsaconf command as root?

Try (as root!) running
Code:
$ /usr/sbin/alsaconf
Although I must confess that I haven't managed to get my mic working either (in Slackware 12.0, on an Ubuntu LiveCD and on a Knoppix LiveCD) and I have unmuted everything in alsamixer and run alsactl store (and turned everything up full volume). I have even tried displaying all options (by pressing F5) and turning up the 2 capture devices that show up. I have an integrated nVidia sound card (MCP61 High-def Audio [rev a2] that uses the hda-intel [lsmod shows snd_hda_intel] driver -- it might be a rebranded RealTek ALC660). Any help? (And I don't mean to hijack the thread but it seems to be the same problem you are having)

yes to: i'm login as root
no to: i don't have the alsactl
but never mind... it is still useless i mean playing with alsamixer and alsactl store it doen't seem to cause any efect on my mic
i have also alsaunmute...maybe this have something to do with the mic...i dono.
i have bigger problem..with my graphical interface
i installed livna and nvidia but still receive error:

% X windows protocol error: BadColor (invalid Colormap parameter).

nvidia driver was suppose to help but it didn't
i have no other ideas how to solve it

If you truly don't have alsaconf or alsctl then you have a messed up or incomplete install. Maybe that's why you're having X problems as well.

Hello,

I had issues with ALSA when I had 11.0 with the 2.6 kernel. Whatever I tried it just would not save the settings (I tried every suggestion on this thread so far and more and nothing). Then just recently, I installed the new 12.0 and ALSA works just fine. The only thing I can think of is that there was an issue with the 2.6 kernel that shipped with 11.0 (I didn't have a choice, I needed the 2.6 kernel due to some new hardware).

There may have been an issue with alsa and the 2.6x kernel in Slack 11, but I didn't experience it. I used the 2.6.18 and the 2.6.17.13 kernel in Slackware 11 and had no issues with alsa.
However, you may have hit on something with your mention of hardware. Perhaps this issue is due to a hardware incompatibility of some kind?

Could very well be. I have a nVidia onboard sound card (I think). I also have a onboard nVidia ethernet card (which is why I had to use the 2.6 kernal).
