Using 16 octaves of pink noise

Why are you trying to run your system in single user mode? That is usually reserved for troubleshooting. Most system services are not run in single user mode, and specifically, /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa is only run from /etc/rc.d/rc.M (which is only run in multiuser modes).

Have you rebooted since? Usually `telinit 3` in the terminal as root should restore the system to a normal multiuser runlevel 3. What is the output of `who -r`? You may wish to (re)run `alsaconf` as root and make sure everything in /etc/modprobe.d/sound (or sound.conf?) looks OK. Otherwise, the output of `lspci -vv`, `lsmod` and `aplay -l` would be handy.
