Alsa Mixer Elems

I'm using Slackware 10 and I just compiled and installed alsa-drivers, alsa-utils, and alsa-libs. Version 1.0.5a I believe from a Linux Format DVD.

My soundcard wasn't producing sound for some reason and I've read about people having problems with the snd-intel8x0 cards, and them working after alsa was compiled and installed.

So I went ahead and did it, I compiled and installed. I didn't run into any errors, I then ran alsaconf and noticed that my card was listed twice which I only have one so I thought that was strange. I selected it and then told it to edit my modules.conf file (which I've read you have to do). Here's my modules.conf file, this is the file in it's entirety.

# ALSA portion
# OSS/Free portion
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.5 ---
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

Then I did a

Code:
modprobe snd-intel8x0
Then I ran, alsamixer and it still says

No Mixer Elems Found

Does anyone know what I should do, or if I've missed something or done something wrong. Sound is nice

I just rebooted thinking that, that might have been the problem. I got this message at startup

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

I went to a terminal and tried alsamixer again and got this message

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: Permission denied

Did I really mess something up or what?

try adding snd-intel8x0m to '/etc/hotplug/blacklist' file (Note the 'm' at the end)

Thanx

I did what you said I added that line into the /etc/hotplug/blacklist file, and then I changed the permissions on /dev/dsp (which got rid of the error). Then I rebooted the system.

Upon reboot I noticed that I got the speaker icon in the system tray but it had a red x on it and when I click on it it just brings a current mixer pull down menu with no options in it.

When I type alsamixer I still get the same error which looks like another permission problem but I don't know which file it's coming from.

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: Permission denied

Did you run alsaconf again? If not, try doing that again and see if it works.
